The National Food Authority (AKU) has blocked a truck carrying 25 tons of corn originating from Serbia, after detecting dangerous levels of aflatoxin B1—a toxic substance harmful to humans and animals.

The shipment was intercepted at the Hani i Hotit customs point, on the border with Montenegro, as it was entering Albanian territory.

According to laboratory analysis, the corn contained aflatoxin B1 levels above the limits allowed by Albanian standards. Although these levels may be acceptable under European Union regulations, Albania enforces stricter food safety norms, which prohibit such products from entering the domestic market.

The confiscated batch, categorized as animal feed corn and destined for the city of Elbasan, was immediately seized by AKU in Shkodër to prevent any potential risk to animal and consumer health.

In addition, AKU inspectors in Shkodër intervened at a dairy farm in the village of Trush, where they found several irregularities in the production and storage processes. As a result, the facility was temporarily closed until the necessary hygienic and sanitary conditions are met.

The National Food Authority emphasized that inspections will continue across the region to ensure food safety and protect public health.
