European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced today that Albania will open all negotiating chapters with the European Union in June 2025, marking a major step toward EU membership.

At a conference hosted by the Centre for European Studies in Brussels, Kos confirmed her agreement with Prime Minister Edi Rama, stating:

“During my mandate as Commissioner for Enlargement, we will welcome new members from the Western Balkans. With Edi Rama, we have agreed that Albania will finally ‘marry’ the European Union.”

Key highlights of Kos’s announcement include:

  • Merit-Based Progress: Kos emphasized that accession must be driven by reforms and merit, ensuring Albania meets all EU standards.
  • June Milestone: “We need to open another set of negotiation chapters with Albania, and this will happen in June, thereby unlocking all chapters,” she said.
  • Closing Chapters: Once opened, Albania will begin the closing process, a critical phase that paves the way for full membership.

Kos underscored the historic nature of this agreement: “Albania will finally be united with Europe,” she added, highlighting the EU’s commitment to stabilizing and integrating the Western Balkans.
