The Italian government has officially published the pension agreement with Albania in its official journal. The agreement, which was signed in February of the previous year, is set to come into effect in the coming weeks and promises significant benefits for citizens of both countries.

This agreement ensures that the social security contributions made between the two nations will be recognized, covering various pension schemes, including retirement pensions, disability pensions, family pensions, health insurance, and maternity leave, as well as unemployment insurance.

Key Benefits for Albanian and Italian Citizens

Approximately half a million Albanians and 4,000 Italians will benefit from this agreement, which will simplify the cross-border pension procedures. The agreement will make it easier for individuals who have worked in both countries to access their pensions without bureaucratic hurdles.

In line with this agreement, a fund of €12 million has been approved for 2025, with incremental increases for the following years: €13.6 million for 2026, €13.1 million for 2027, and further increases to €23.4 million after 2031.

Strengthening Social Security Rights for Albanians Abroad

This agreement follows similar agreements signed by Albania with several other countries, including Turkey, Belgium, Hungary, and Luxembourg, aimed at ensuring the protection of Albanian social security rights abroad.

By establishing clear frameworks for recognizing the contributions of citizens who have worked in different countries, this agreement marks a significant step in strengthening social security cooperation between Albania and Italy, benefitting the large Albanian diaspora in Italy.
