The Republic of Albania has officially joined a significant regional agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation and coordination in air search and rescue (SAR). This multi-national pact was originally signed in Ohrid on February 22, 2023.

The Albanian government’s decision, formalized by the Council of Ministers, proposes a draft law for Albania’s adherence to the agreement. This draft will now be sent to the Albanian Parliament for review and approval. The agreement involves a total of ten countries, with Albania now joining the initial nine signatories: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Government Decision and Legislative Process

The decision, signed by Prime Minister Edi Rama (or Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku in his absence), entered into force immediately upon its adoption by the Council of Ministers. The proposed law, once approved by the Parliament and signed by Speaker Elisa Spiropali, will formally integrate Albania into this crucial regional framework.

The agreement underscores a commitment to cross-border collaboration in responding to aviation incidents and emergencies, ensuring a more coordinated and effective search and rescue effort across the region.
