Albania Opens Chapter 6 in EU Accession Talks: Focus on Foreign Relations and Security Policies

Albania’s European Union accession process continues today with the opening of Chapter 6 in the negotiations, during the third intergovernmental conference between Albania and the EU. The focus of this new chapter is on “External Relations,” which includes two crucial sections: Chapter 30, “External Relations,” and Chapter 31, “Foreign Policy, Security, and Defense.”

The event, held in Brussels, sees the participation of Prime Minister Edi Rama along with key government officials, including Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani, Minister of State and Chief Negotiator Majlinda Dhuka, Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu, Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja, and Minister of State for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption Adea Pirdeni. The delegation also includes negotiators responsible for chapters 30 and 31.

This conference serves as a precursor to the upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit, scheduled for tomorrow, where Prime Minister Rama and his ministers will meet with high-ranking EU officials to discuss the next steps in Albania’s integration journey. The opening of Chapter 6 marks a significant milestone in Albania’s EU aspirations, particularly in strengthening its foreign relations and aligning its policies with EU standards.

As part of the broader integration process, Albania is committed to aligning its foreign policy, security, and defense measures with EU guidelines, which will play a crucial role in advancing its bid for full EU membership.
