Albania’s opposition caused serious disruptions in the Assembly on Thursday, preventing the normal start of the plenary session by occupying the seats reserved for government ministers and staging a protest inside the chamber.

According to the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATSH), opposition MPs attempted to sit in ministers’ chairs, prompting the intervention of parliamentary security guards, who removed them from the area.

Heated Confrontation Between Government and Opposition

The incident led to heated exchanges between members of the ruling majority and opposition lawmakers, further escalating political tensions inside the Assembly.

During the confrontation, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha addressed security forces directly, urging them not to physically intervene against opposition deputies.

Touching deputies is a criminal, shameful, and unprecedented act. You are defending thieves. You will face the most serious legal consequences. Do not touch deputies, or you will face very severe repercussions,” Berisha said.

Political Tensions Remain High

The disruption reflects ongoing political tensions in Albania, where confrontations between the opposition and the ruling majority have increasingly spilled into parliamentary proceedings, raising concerns about institutional stability and parliamentary order.
