An unusual situation occurred on Friday in the small municipality of Kaštelir in the Istria region of Croatia, after workers of a construction company raised the Albanian flag at a building site in the town center.
According to Jutarnji, the flag was raised to celebrate the birth of a worker’s child, but some local residents claim that similar actions have happened before and perceive them as a provocation.
The incident was immediately reported to authorities, who intervened and removed the flag. Police have initiated further procedures.
The Municipality of Kaštelir, in a response, stated that such events have not occurred until now, but they are obliged to react when there is a potential legal violation. The municipality referred to Article 26 of the Law on Offenses Against Public Order and Peace, which stipulates that a person may be sanctioned “if they display the flag of a foreign state without a general call from a socio-political organization or without the approval of the competent administrative body or police.”
“We reacted immediately upon seeing the flag at the construction site and informed the police of everything. According to our regulations, displaying a foreign flag in this manner is not permitted, and the competent authorities are now carrying out their procedures. This is the first time we have encountered such a situation in Kaštelir, and we expect the rules of the Republic of Croatia to be respected,” said the mayor of the small municipality, Xhuliano Petrović.
