On June 18, 2025, New York Chancellor of Education Melissa Aviles-Ramos announced that the Albanian language has been officially added to the list of languages used for school communications by the City’s Department of Education, reports Rks News.

Out of about 180 languages spoken in New York, until now only 10 were part of the official communications in public schools. With the recent decision, this number has increased to 13, now including Albanian.

This initiative will significantly ease the inclusion of Albanian families in their children’s educational life, as every document, notice, or important information will be available in the Albanian language.

For years, many Albanian parents faced difficulties due to language barriers, but now they will be able to participate more actively and confidently in the educational process.

This inclusion will also help Albanian students feel more included and improve their academic and emotional progress.

In addition to this decision, a few months ago, New York opened the first bilingual Albanian-English class, strengthening the possibility to preserve cultural heritage and advance academically.
