A tragic workplace accident occurred this morning, May 19, in the municipality of Vernio near Prato, Italy, where a 56-year-old Albanian worker lost his life, Rks News reports.
According to La Repubblica, the victim was unloading construction materials from a truck on Via del Bisenzio, in the village of Mercatale. The vehicle was parked on a slope, but due to a loss of traction on the asphalt, the truck suddenly moved and crushed the worker, causing his immediate death. The truck then ended up in a roadside ditch.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. The victim was employed by a company contracted by the Italian State Railways. Although emergency services (118) arrived quickly at the scene, paramedics were unable to save him.
Firefighters, Carabinieri, municipal police, and ASL Centro inspectors also intervened. The Prato Prosecutor’s Office, led by Prosecutor Luca Tescaroli, has launched an investigation for negligent homicide. The accident site and the truck have been seized to determine whether there were any violations of workplace safety regulations.
