Former Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, has stated that she will once again be the proposed candidate for Speaker of the Assembly, after failing twice today to secure enough votes for the position.

Speaking to the media, she claimed that the opposition is blocking the functioning of the Assembly by not supporting Vetëvendosje’s proposal.

“First, let me thank the 57 deputies who supported me as Speaker of the Assembly. We need just 4 more votes… In total, 61 deputies must vote in favor. As you know, the session was suspended, and within 48 hours the next session will be held. The Assembly cannot be constituted without the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers. We were ready to proceed with the next steps, but it appears that the opposition is blocking the Assembly because they didn’t support VV’s proposal.

It’s up to Vetëvendosje to put forward the next proposal — and it will be the same name. Thank you,” she said.

In both rounds of voting, Haxhiu received only 57 votes.

The Social Democratic Initiative (Nisma) did not vote in favor of her candidacy, despite earlier claims from Haxhiu that the party had the necessary numbers.
