The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has reacted to the outcome of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, following the victory of opposition leader Peter Magyar and the end of Viktor Orbán’s long-standing rule.

Vučić, who has maintained close political ties with Orbán for years, congratulated Magyar on his electoral win while emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation between Hungary and Serbia.

“I congratulate Peter Magyar on his election victory. I am confident that strong cooperation between Hungary and Serbia will continue to grow. I am also grateful to Viktor Orbán for his contribution to building such relations,” Vučić wrote on X.

Political Ties and Regional Implications

The relationship between Vučić and Orbán has been widely seen as a key political alliance in the region, particularly in the context of their shared positions on sovereignty, migration, and relations with the European Union.

Orbán’s defeat is expected to have broader regional implications, potentially affecting Serbia’s diplomatic positioning within Europe.

Controversies During the Campaign

According to several Hungarian media outlets critical of the government, the final phase of the election campaign was marked by controversy.

One issue that drew attention involved the Turkish Stream pipeline, which transports Russian gas to Hungary via Serbia. Reports emerged of explosives being discovered along a section of the pipeline, prompting reactions from both Orbán and Vučić.

However, the issue quickly faded from public discourse. Hungarian journalists later published correspondence allegedly suggesting that individuals close to Orbán had warned about the possibility of a staged incident near the Serbian border.

Following these reports, the story largely disappeared from the public spotlight, despite earlier speculation about the potential declaration of a state of emergency or even a postponement of elections.

Looking Ahead

Despite the political shift in Hungary, Vučić’s message signals continuity in bilateral relations, as both countries navigate a changing political landscape in the region.
