The American Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, stated that the inauguration of the Museum of the Krusha e Madhe Massacre in Rahovec documents this event and ensures that the historical facts cannot be contested. He made these comments on the 25th anniversary of one of the most horrific massacres of the Kosovo War, that of Krusha e Madhe.
“This museum will help everyone who visits it to learn what we already know, that historical facts are indisputable,” he declared.
“NATO acted precisely because of horrific crimes like the one that occurred here. On the same day, the then Secretary of State, Marilyn Albright said: ‘it is impossible to negotiate while Milosevic increases the number of forces, attacks civilians, and burns villages in Kosovo’.”
“NATO’s actions aimed to push for peace and security in Europe and to end the atrocities and humanitarian crisis. As an alliance, we came together to respond only after we had exhausted all alternatives to stop the bloodshed,” Hovenier said.
He expressed his condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims in his capacity as the representative of the American President in Kosovo.
Hovenier mentioned understanding that families and survivors of this massacre have been requesting the establishment of the museum for 25 years, and he expressed pride in the American contribution to the process.
“The United States of America is proud to have supported your efforts to some extent, through the training of 30 Kosovars in interviewing skills, oral history ethics, and archiving as part of the oral history of the National Library with the survivors of the Krusha e Madhe massacre,” the American ambassador stated.
Among several narratives of the massacre, he highlighted the story of entrepreneur Fahrije Hoti in Blerta Basholli’s film “Hive.”
“Despite facing all those terrible tragedies, the women of Krusha overcame stigma, discrimination, confronted their sorrow, and decided to create a life that is commendable for every individual and is greater than the individual,” he said.
