BBC has included in its list of the 12 most significant photographs of 2025 an image captured during the massive wildfires that swept across Greece this summer.
The photograph, taken by Reuters photojournalist Thanasis Stavrakis, shows 33-year-old Albanian Oslien Muçobega rescuing a sheep from the flames in the Patras region. He is seen carrying the animal on his motorbike, driving through smoke and fire.
The incident occurred in August, when the region of Achaia in western Greece was engulfed by wildfires, forcing many residents to flee and putting both human and animal lives at risk.
BBC described the photo as an image of deep significance, comparing it to early depictions of the “Good Shepherd” in Christian art, where Christ is shown carrying a fragile animal on his shoulders.
According to the British media outlet, this symbolic connection makes the photograph one of the most powerful and meaningful moments of the year.
