The dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia has entered a deep state of stagnation and cannot be restarted with the same actors and methods, said Serbian political analyst Dušan Janjić, Rks News reports.

According to him, citizens in both countries have lost faith in the current process, while the European Union no longer sees the dialogue as a political priority despite the recent appointment of Peter Sørensen as the new EU envoy.

“With the same language and the same actors, you can’t create a new show. The dialogue is over. Borrell and Lajčák themselves admitted we’ve been in a conflict management phase since 2022 and even that is now blocked,” Janjić stated.

He emphasized that the United States is not sufficiently engaged in the process, while Sørensen, in his view, merely follows the European Commission’s technical agenda. Terms like “dialogue” and “normalization” are now politically discredited and fail to produce concrete results.

Commenting on domestic developments in Serbia, Janjić noted that support for President Aleksandar Vučić’s regime is declining as seen in recent local elections, where, despite pressure and irregularities, the ruling party failed to secure convincing victories in some municipalities.

“Snap elections are the only democratic and peaceful way forward. But they cannot happen without a prior agreement between the government, opposition, students, and international actors,” he added.

According to Janjić, the potential for change exists, but a democratic transition remains out of reach without political will and a clearly defined internal platform.
