Analysts do not welcome the extension of Lajcak’s mandate

Although he was appointed to the post of European emissary for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak for more than four years is considered to have failed in the mission for which he was charged.

Nor is the continuation of his mandate until the end of January 2025, according to experts in the field, expected to bring results in the dialogue process.

According to the political expert, Fidan Ukaj, Lajcak has favored Serbia and that he has not helped in the normalization of relations between the two states.

“I think it is a continuation of wasting time in helping this process, Lajçak has not shown results. I added to this the mistrust towards Lajcak that the Kosovar side had,” he said.

Ukaj expects that only after the appointment of a new mediator, the dialogue process will be unblocked.

“The creation of this trust towards the parties and the parties towards the facilitator is one of the main indicators for the continuation of the dialogue process or the unblocking of this process”, he added.

Other connoisseurs of this process are calling Lajçak’s stances one-sided, according to whom the EU is showing that it has no interest in imposing any solution on the parties.

“We have a disturbance of the old leadership with the new one that will be appointed very soon and they will be ready for falsification but not to impose solutions. But since this solution is not being imposed and there is no more advanced role of the USA and Great Britain in this dialogue, the chances are for the next failure”, said Arbnor Sadiku.

And for Melazim Koci, the Slovak diplomat is simply adapting to Serbia. “There is a very one-sided, asymmetrical attitude and with this approach he is buying time, which is the last goal of Serbia”, he said.

The special envoy of the European Union for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Lajcak has been appointed to this position by Josep Borell, who has until now held the position of the head of Foreign Policy and Security in the EU. / RTK
