The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) has urged Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Parliament President Ana Brnabić to immediately cease targeting journalists and media outlets, condemning their recent statements directed against the editorial team of N1 TV.
The remarks from Vučić and Brnabić came in response to news coverage of the arrest of war veterans, who were suspected of plotting an assassination attempt on Vučić. N1 had reported, alongside police statements, that the arrest was intended as “intimidation ahead of the March 15 gathering,” quoting the defense attorney of the detained veterans.
ANEM highlighted that such statements often trigger tabloid campaigns, resulting in threats to journalists both online and offline. These threats have escalated over recent years, with physical attacks on journalists in 2025 reaching a record high in modern Serbian history. ANEM stressed that law enforcement and prosecutors have addressed only a negligible portion of these incidents.
The association called on international organizations focused on press freedom, media protection, and human rights to monitor and respond to the Serbian authorities’ treatment of the media.
