A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey on Tuesday morning, according to confirmed data from seismological institutions and later verified by a seismologist.
The epicenter was recorded at coordinates 39.186°N, 28.293°E, at a depth of only 7 kilometers, making the tremor strongly felt at the surface.
Reports indicate the earthquake was felt most intensely near Sındırgı, about 12 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, and in the city of Balıkesir, located 62 kilometers northwest, with a population of around 238,000 residents.
The tremor occurred at 07:54 local time (10:54 Kosovo time) and lasted only a few seconds but caused panic among residents in homes and workplaces.
This was the second earthquake within hours, following a stronger 6.0-magnitude quake that shook the same region around 11:00 p.m. the previous night.
Turkish authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and follow civil protection guidelines in case of aftershocks.
