Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner Jodie Haydon, becoming the country’s first sitting leader to wed while in office.

The couple were married in the capital, Canberra, on Saturday afternoon local time – just one day after the final parliamentary sitting of the year.

“We are happy to share our love and commitment to spend our lives together, in front of our closest family and friends,” Albanese said in a brief statement.

The couple got engaged on Valentine’s Day last year. The proposal by the Labor Party leader, as well as the wedding reception, took place at his official residence, The Lodge.

Up until the wedding day, the plans had been kept secret due to security concerns and potential disruptions.

In attendance were Haydon’s parents, as well as Albanese’s son from his previous marriage.

Albanese’s dog, Toto, had the role of ring bearer as the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s song “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”.

The prime minister also shared a video on his official social media accounts.

Several members of Albanese’s cabinet attended the ceremony.
