Antifascist protest marches were held today in four cities across Croatia, organized by the initiative “United Against Fascism.”

Demonstrations took place in Zagreb, Rijeka, Pula, and Zadar.
In the capital, the march began at noon at the Main Railway Station, proceeding toward the Monument to the Victims of the Holocaust and the Ustaša Regime, and then moving on to Ban Jelačić Square, according to N1 Zagreb.

But the march in Rijeka faced a serious incident. At the very start of the protest on Jadranski Square, several masked young men dressed in black appeared.

According to Index, they threw firecrackers at the crowd, creating panic among participants. Police officers were reportedly standing directly in front of them, watching without intervening, raising concerns about the authorities’ willingness—or ability—to protect citizens from intimidation and violence.

The initiative “United Against Fascism”, which brings together around ten civil society organizations, said the marches were organized in response to “widespread violence, fear, threats and bans” increasingly present in the public space.

Organizers stressed that citizens must not allow intimidation to become the norm.

“We will not allow bans and violence to become standard practice. We will not respond to threats with fear, but with united antifascist resistance. We have been silent long enough—let us march together again toward liberation. Today’s march is only the beginning. Our collective work must continue until fascism is eradicated and our towns and villages are safe for everyone,” the organizers said.
