The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has today urged all parties to engage in dialogue with Iran, particularly regarding its nuclear program, in order to prevent a crisis that could have “devastating consequences for the region.”

During a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Guterres stated that the UN strongly condemns the violent repression that has occurred in Iran.

“We are following the ongoing discussions with concern and assess that it is essential to establish a dialogue to reach an agreement, especially on the nuclear issue, in order to avoid a crisis that could have destructive consequences for the region,” the UN chief said.

These statements come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, as the international community seeks diplomatic ways to de-escalate the situation.
