On Monday, Donald Trump made announcements regarding the end of the war in Gaza and introduced an initiative unprecedented in the military, diplomatic, and political history of U.S.-Arab relations.

As part of the initiative to end the Gaza conflict and as “compensation” to Qatar for the Israeli strike in Doha, the U.S. president signed an executive order significantly strengthening America’s security commitment to Qatar. This is an unprecedented security agreement between the United States and an Arab country.

According to the presidential order, published today, “The United States will consider any armed attack against the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States.”

The order further states: “In the event of such an attack, the United States will take all appropriate and lawful measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military measures — to protect the interests of the United States and the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability.”

During his recent Middle East tour last May, the U.S. president departed Doha after a 48-hour visit, during which he “loaded” Air Force One with $1.3 trillion in Qatari direct investments in the United States.
