The League of Historians of Kosovo “Ali Hadri” – Deçan branch has called for the establishment of a National Unity Government, arguing that the country is facing “a total institutional blockade” and needs an immediate, unifying solution to restore political and constitutional order.
In a public statement, the organization said that such a government should focus on protecting the constitutional order, strengthening state institutions, and enhancing coordination with Kosovo’s international allies, particularly with strategic security partners.
“A name that could lead this National Unity Government and who has shown extraordinary commitment to national unity and security—while standing above political party lines—is Armend Mehaj, the former Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kosovo,” the statement reads.
The historians propose that Mehaj serve as Prime Minister for a one-year term, focusing on:
- Passing the national budget
- Resolving the institutional deadlock concerning the Presidency
- Organizing new parliamentary elections within a year
According to the statement, this would be the most “measured, state-building, and stabilizing path” for the Republic of Kosovo.
They further emphasized Mehaj’s strong ties with American and European allies, describing him as a respected and principled figure who has no personal political ambitions but a genuine will to serve the state and national interests.
The proposed government, they suggest, should include an equal composition of ministers — 50% from political parties and 50% from academia and the university sector — to ensure professionalism, balance, and inclusive representation.
The statement concludes that this proposal would not only serve the domestic political scene but would also be a unifying message for all Albanian political actors in Albania and across the region, where Albanians form state-building communities.
