The U.S. military has announced plans to hold a large parade on June 14th to mark the 250th anniversary of its founding but the event has already taken on political significance as it coincides with President Donald Trump’s birthday.
According to military officials, the parade will feature over 6,600 soldiers, about 150 military vehicles, 50 helicopters, and performances by seven military bands.
Officially, the military states the parade is organized to honor its establishment in 1775. However, some members of Congress have criticized the event, calling it “a birthday parade for Trump” and “an unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money.”
It remains unclear whether Trump will attend the parade, but international media report that he is expected to participate in ceremonial activities and administer the oath to some new recruits and soldiers.
Trump had proposed such a military parade during his first term, but the plans were abandoned due to concerns over the high cost.
