At least 15 people have died and 18 others were injured after an electric tram in Lisbon derailed and crashed, emergency services reported.
Five of the injured are in serious condition, according to a statement from the National Institute for Medical Emergencies.
Footage from the scene showed the tram—well-known among tourists—almost completely destroyed, with emergency workers pulling people from the wreckage.
Authorities have not identified the victims or disclosed their nationalities, but said some foreign nationals were among the deceased.
It is not yet clear what caused the accident, which occurred around 6 p.m., at the start of the evening rush hour.
