At least 21 people have died and 30 others are reported missing following a landslide in Kenya’s western region, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred today in Marakwet East, an area currently experiencing the rainy season, which has contributed to unstable soil conditions.

“We have confirmed the loss of 21 lives in this tragedy, while over 30 people are considered missing, as reported by their families,” wrote Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen on X, according to KosovaPress.

Minister Murkomen added that 25 individuals with serious injuries were airlifted to a hospital in Eldoret, while others with minor injuries received treatment locally.

Search and rescue operations are set to resume on Sunday, and residents in landslide-prone areas were urged to relocate to safer ground.

The government continues to monitor weather conditions closely, as heavy rains persist in the region, raising concerns about further landslides.
