The wildfire wave has reached its peak in southeastern Australia, affecting New South Wales and the island state of Tasmania, where the situation remains extremely dangerous.

Authorities have confirmed the first casualty: a 59-year-old firefighter from New South Wales who lost his life after being struck by a tree while attempting to control the flames near the town of Bulahdelah.

The fires have destroyed approximately 40 homes across the two most affected states. In New South Wales alone, there are 52 active fire sites, nine of which are out of control. Tasmania is also facing severe damage, with 19 homes destroyed over the weekend in the coastal community of Dolphin Sands.

Federal and state governments have immediately activated emergency aid measures for affected communities, providing support to residents, businesses, farmers, and local authorities. Currently, over 1,100 firefighters and dozens of emergency teams, equipped with hundreds of vehicles, are battling more than 90 fire outbreaks across the region.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, following a visit to the National Emergency Management headquarters in Canberra, warned that the country is facing a “particularly challenging” fire season due to the combination of high temperatures and low rainfall.

“New South Wales, in particular, presents a set of conditions suggesting a very severe season for rescue teams,” he stated, adding that parts of Western Australia and Tasmania are also ablaze.

While summer still has time to go, authorities warn that the situation could worsen further, urging vigilance and strict adherence to all safety guidelines.
