At least five people have drowned and two others remain missing after large waves struck parts of Australia’s coastline, according to a report by the BBC.
The incidents occurred off the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria.
On Saturday, the body of a man was found in the water near Tathra, New South Wales. This came a day after the deaths of a 58-year-old fisherman and two other men were confirmed in separate incidents.
Ongoing Search and Rescue Operations:
Rescue teams are still searching for a missing man near Sydney, while another man and a woman were swept into the sea on Friday in San Remo, Victoria.
“One of the women managed to return to shore, but the other woman and the man did not make it,” said local police.
Government Response:
Victoria’s Premier, Jacinta Allan, described the tragedy as “a horrific start to the Easter weekend,” extending condolences to the families affected.
Emergency services have issued warnings urging the public to stay away from dangerous coastal areas as wave conditions remain hazardous.
