Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), declared on Saturday that while his party does not advocate leaving the European Union, it opposes what he termed Brussels’ “climate communism.”
Addressing approximately 3,000 supporters near Vienna, Kickl emphasized, “No member of the Freedom Party wants to leave the EU.” However, he called for a period of “self-reflection” within Brussels to prioritize economic growth over what he sees as self-aggrandizement.
Kickl, poised to become Austria’s first far-right post-war chancellor, advocated reducing bureaucracy and ending what he described as “climate communism.” He also reiterated his vision of transforming Austria into a “fortress” against immigration, proposing stricter asylum measures, in-kind assistance instead of cash benefits, and increased deportation efforts.
Immigration, Kickl stated, is “a matter of destiny” for Europe as a whole, not just Austria.
Known for his opposition to EU sanctions on Russia, Kickl dismissed claims of pro-Moscow leanings, instead describing his stance as one of “strict neutrality.” Austria, in accordance with its constitution, maintains a neutral status and is not a NATO member.
The FPÖ is currently negotiating with the conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) to form a coalition government.
