Austria’s ambassador to the European Union has resigned following reports that he allegedly ran an anonymous blog containing explicit sexual content, Reuters reports.

Thomas Oberreiter, 59, had served as Austria’s permanent representative to the EU in Brussels since 2023. He did not respond to requests for comment.

Austria’s Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger learned of the allegations on Saturday and ordered a thorough review of the matter but did not specify details of the suspicions.

“On Monday, the ambassador requested to be released from his duties for personal reasons. Minister Meinl-Reisinger accepted his request,” the ministry said in its statement.

The ministry added it could not share further details, citing data protection, and said its statement should not be taken as confirmation of any unspecified allegations.

Reports in Austrian media, including the newspaper Der Standard, identified Oberreiter as the alleged author of the blog, which is said to have featured graphic accounts mixing fictional scenes with real-life photos, and had been running since 2015.

Der Standard reported that Oberreiter disputed what he called “alleged suspicions.”
