The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has announced that Kosovo has suspended the import of live animals and animal products from Hungary following reports of the outbreak of “Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)” in the country, writes Reporteri.net.

In its statement, AUV explained that the disease is viral and has the potential for rapid spread. However, it emphasized that this disease does not pose a risk to human health.

AUV further stated that if the disease is confirmed in the country, Kosovo is prepared with inspection capacities to control its spread.

“Foot-and-Mouth Disease is a viral disease with the potential for rapid transmission. It affects cloven-hoofed animals and causes significant economic damage. The disease affects domestic animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs) and wild ruminants (deer, roe deer), as well as pigs. Clinical signs include fever and the formation of blisters that localize on the mucous membrane of the mouth, teats, coronet of the hooves, and between the toes. Foot-and-Mouth Disease does not pose a risk to human health but has economic implications, particularly in production and trade. In the event of confirmation of the disease, Kosovo has prepared inspection capacities to control its spread. Our country maintains its status as free from Foot-and-Mouth Disease,” the statement reads.
