A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway on Eiger Mountain in the Swiss Alps after an avalanche buried several individuals beneath snow and debris.
The Bern Cantonal Police confirmed the incident on social media, stating that the avalanche struck shortly after noon on Saturday. Emergency response teams were immediately mobilized.
“We are currently conducting an intensive operation to locate and rescue individuals believed to be trapped under the snow,” the police said in an official statement.
The mission involves specialized mountain rescue teams, equipped to navigate challenging alpine terrain. The exact number of victims and their condition remains unknown at this time, according to a report from Euronews.
Eiger, standing at 3,967 meters (approximately 13,000 feet), is situated near popular alpine villages such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen—regions frequented by climbers and tourists year-round.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to allow rescuers to operate without disruption.
