A passenger plane crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, and initial reports indicate that 25 people survived, according to the country’s Ministry of Emergencies.
The Ministry said emergency services were attempting to extinguish a fire at the crash site, and based on preliminary data, 25 people survived. Local media reported that the plane was carrying 67 passengers and five crew members, The Guardian reported, as relayed by RKS NEWS.
“A plane operating on the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau. It belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines,” said Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport on Telegram.
The Kazakh Ministry of Transport stated that there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board.
Russian news agencies reported that the plane had been flying from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya region but was diverted due to fog in Grozny.
Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed that the Embraer 190 made an “emergency landing” around three kilometers from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea.
“Information about the victims is being clarified, but according to preliminary reports, there are survivors,” the Ministry of Emergencies said.
