The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) has announced that in recent months it has been the target of a series of digital attacks, some of which were carried out by Forest Blizzard, a hacker group controlled by the Russian Military Intelligence Service (GRU). This information was confirmed by an official report from the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center, the organization stated.

In its announcement, the Centre reported multiple attacks targeting its email accounts, website, and digital services.

These attacks included fake emails and messages sent to partners via online communication apps by unknown actors, as well as the creation of a fake website designed to deceive participants of the Belgrade Security Conference. According to BCBP, the conference’s official website registered more than 10,000 attacks during the event.

However, the organization emphasized that the most concerning attacks were conducted by the state-controlled Russian hacker group, known internationally for its cyber operations.

BCBP added that all attacks were identified, affected accounts were immediately secured, and additional security measures were implemented. Attempts to deploy malware and targeted attacks against staff were also reported and neutralized.

The Centre concluded that these incidents highlight the scale of the threats and the challenging environment in which civil society organizations in Serbia operate, as well as their exposure to attacks from foreign states.

BCBP stated it will request protection from the relevant state authorities, stressing that such attacks limit the operational space of civil society organizations. The Centre reaffirmed its commitment to its mission of supporting a democratic and free society and a country on its path toward European Union membership.
