Unknown drones have caused new security incidents in Belgium, appearing over Liège Airport and a nuclear power plant near Antwerp. Following Germany’s lead, the United Kingdom is now assisting Belgium in defending critical infrastructure from drone threats.

Liège Airport, one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs, was forced to suspend operations for nearly an hour on Sunday evening due to multiple drones spotted in the area. In addition, three drones were observed over the Doel nuclear power plant, though officials report no operational disruptions.

The German Ministry of Defense announced last week that the Bundeswehr is assisting Belgium in countering drones, reflecting growing concerns over hybrid threats. London has also deployed personnel and equipment to help safeguard Belgian airspace and infrastructure, according to UK Defence Secretary John Healey, emphasizing joint NATO protection measures.

Recent drone sightings include the Kleine-Brogel military base, used by NATO, where unconfirmed reports suggest US nuclear weapons are stored. Belgium, home to both NATO and the European Union headquarters, also hosts Euroclear, which manages a significant portion of Western frozen assets linked to the Ukraine conflict. Authorities are prioritizing protection of critical infrastructure and financial centers amid rising security concerns.
