Belgium has taken steps to recognize the State of Palestine, following in the footsteps of countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
“Through this initiative, we continue to support international law, particularly the right of peoples to self-determination,” Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever stated on Monday during a conference in New York. The event aimed to promote a two-state solution, as called for by France and Saudi Arabia.
The conference sought to provide new momentum for diplomatic efforts to resolve the Middle East conflict, based on a framework in which Israel and an independent, democratic Palestinian state live side by side in peace.
“The two-state solution is not dead,” the Belgian Prime Minister emphasized. “It is wounded, but its revival is possible and must be pursued for the benefit of both peoples,” he added.
