The Basic Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has requested the police to gather necessary information regarding the incident that occurred on Tuesday in the Serbian Parliament, where fireworks and smoke bombs were thrown.

The prosecutor’s office stated that the request was made in order to identify the perpetrators and to determine whether there are elements of a criminal offense, specifically “serious offenses against public safety.”

The incident in the Parliament hall occurred after opposition members protested the approval of the agenda presented by the governing coalition.

At that point, opposition deputies left their seats and activated the fireworks.

The Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had ordered the collection of available evidence to identify the individuals who brought and used the fireworks, as well as to understand how they were brought into the Parliament building.

The request also includes identifying those who, as stated, threw objects and injured deputies.

The ruling parties approved the agenda, which consisted of 62 points, and rejected the opposition’s request to discuss only the amendments to the Higher Education Law, which would fulfill the fourth demand of students who have been protesting for months.

Students continue to block over 60 faculties nationwide, demanding criminal and political responsibility for the deaths of 15 people in the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad Railway Station.

Initially, they called for the publication of all documentation related to the station’s reconstruction to determine responsibility for the accident.

They also demanded the punishment of those who attacked students during protests, as well as the suspension of proceedings against arrested protesters.

Students also demand a 20% increase in the higher education budget.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Brnabić, stated that an agreement had been reached with representatives of all state universities regarding the amendments to the Higher Education Law, and that this would fulfill the students’ demand.

The government claims that, in addition to the budget increase, all other student demands have been met.

On the other hand, students maintain that the blockades and protests will continue, and that expert groups will determine whether their demands have been fulfilled.
