Sali Berisha has called on the United States Congress to review the possibility of Kosovo joining NATO.
Speaking at a press conference, the leader of Albania’s Democratic Party marked the 27th anniversary of NATO’s intervention, which led to the liberation of Kosovo from the forces of Slobodan Milošević.
Berisha described NATO’s campaign as one of the alliance’s most significant achievements, emphasizing that “every Albanian bows with deep gratitude” for the intervention.
He argued that Kosovo’s membership in NATO would be both justified and strategically important, stating that “the borders of NATO should extend to Kosovo’s borders.”
According to Berisha, such a move would send a strong geopolitical message, particularly in response to the influence and ambitions of Vladimir Putin in the Balkans.
He further stressed that Kosovo’s accession to NATO would serve as a powerful countermeasure to destabilizing efforts in the region and contribute to long-term security.
Berisha also highlighted Kosovo as a model in the region, citing its democratic development and economic functioning as stronger than in many neighboring countries.
“I call on the US Congress to examine Kosovo’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. This initiative will be further pursued by the opposition within the NATO Parliamentary Assembly,” he stated.
