The German government announced today that it has no plans for a “short-term recognition of a Palestinian state”, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron declared his intention to do so at the UN in September.
Germany Prioritizes Two-State Solution and Israel’s Security
Berlin continues to hold the view that the recognition of a Palestinian state is one of the final stages in achieving a two-state solution, the German government stated.
The statement also added that the security of Israel remains of “crucial importance” to Germany.
Macron had announced last night that France would recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in New York this September. “Loyal to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine,” Macron wrote on social media.
