US President Joe Biden has condemned a wave of Russian missile attacks that killed at least 41 civilians in Ukraine as a “terrible reminder of Russia’s brutality”, as he vowed to strengthen Kiev’s air defences.
At least 166 people have been injured across the country in the rocket attacks, including several at a children’s hospital in Kiev.
This reaction of the American president comes on the day when the NATO summit that will take place in Washington is expected to begin
Biden said that further reinforcements for Ukraine’s air defense will be presented at the meeting.
The leaders of the 32 NATO member countries, their partner countries and the EU will gather to mark the bloc’s 75th anniversary.
The US president said he will welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of NATO member countries.
The summit will focus on defense and deterrence in the context of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
“We will announce new measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses to help protect cities and civilians from Russian attacks,” Biden added.
“I will meet with President Zelensky to make it clear to him our support for Ukraine, which is unwavering”, said the leader of the most powerful state in the world, among other things.
The United Nations Security Council will also meet today at the request of Ukraine.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has joined Western officials in condemning the Russian missile attack on Ukraine.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has declared July 9 a day of mourning, as a result of the deadly Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital.
