President Joe Biden has reiterated the importance of preserving democracy, urging Americans not to downplay the events of January 6, 2021, when the U.S. Capitol was stormed by a violent mob.

During a speech to Democratic lawmakers at the White House, Biden emphasized that the attack highlighted the fragility of democratic norms. He contrasted his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power with former President Donald Trump’s actions during the 2021 certification of electoral results.

Biden Reflects on January 6

“Four years ago, on January 6, the Capitol was violently attacked. Democracy was put to the test, but it survived thanks to the courage of Capitol Police and others who stood firm. We must never forget their bravery,” Biden stated.

The President called on lawmakers to “tell the truth” about the attack and resist any attempts to erase its significance. “It’s our duty to honor the Constitution, not just on extraordinary days like January 6, but every single day,” he added.

Honoring Those Who Stood for Democracy

Biden recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Representative Liz Cheney and Congressman Bennie Thompson for their leadership during the Congressional investigation into the attack. The President described their efforts as critical to defending democratic values.

As Congress prepares to certify Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, Biden urged vigilance against complacency. “Rules and institutions matter. We must respect the traditions that define America, including the peaceful transfer of power,” Biden remarked.

The upcoming certification, expected to proceed without procedural objections or violence, marks a stark contrast to the events of 2021.

Preserving Democratic Integrity

Biden has consistently framed Trump as a threat to democracy, warning voters in 2024 about the risks posed by his potential return. Reflecting on his presidency, Biden reiterated his commitment to upholding democratic norms, saying, “We must safeguard the principles that have long guided this nation.”

As the United States navigates this pivotal moment, Biden’s words serve as a reminder of the delicate balance required to maintain democratic integrity.
