A tragedy struck the Central Mediterranean this afternoon when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Tunisia, resulting in at least 40 fatalities, including several newborns.

The incident occurred near Salakta in the Mahdia Governorate, a key departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

The victims are reported to be migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa. The local radio station Mosaique cited Walid Chatrbi, spokesperson for the Mahdia Court, confirming the death toll.

Rescue efforts by coast guard units managed to save 30 other migrants, who were brought to safety.

Meanwhile, the Tunisian Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an immediate investigation to determine the full circumstances of the disaster.

This shipwreck adds to the long list of fatalities along the migration route between North Africa and Europe, highlighting the high human cost of dangerous maritime journeys.
