Former U.S. National Security Advisor during Donald Trump’s first administration, John Bolton, has expressed concern over the policies pursued by the Republican president. He warned that U.S. allies should prepare for a trade war.
“I am concerned about the policies President Trump will follow in his second term. I worry about a trade war between the United States and its allies, as well as the way he will handle the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
In the past, we have seen Trump’s stance on Ukraine, and I am worried about a new U.S. position that could put Ukraine in a difficult situation against Russia. I genuinely fear that the next four years will be long and challenging,” Bolton stated in an interview with Top News.
The Balkans as a Priority
Bolton emphasized the importance of the Balkans, noting that the risk in the region remains high.
“Trump and his advisors must pay attention to the Balkans. I believe the region should be a priority because tensions between Kosovo and Serbia must be resolved,” said Bolton.
Regarding the territorial exchange proposal, Bolton suggested that Kosovo and Serbia can overcome their disputes, pointing out that the biggest challenge during Trump’s first term was the name dispute of North Macedonia.
A Balanced Agreement Between Kosovo and Serbia
Bolton recalled efforts made in 2018-2019 to reach a Kosovo-Serbia agreement, emphasizing that while the challenges remain significant, past opportunities should not be overlooked.
“The Kosovo-Serbia issue is not as complex as North Macedonia’s name dispute. However, both sides reached a compromise. If an acceptable agreement can be reached—one that is not imposed from outside—it will prevent foreign actors from exploiting tensions and create opportunities for NATO integration,” Bolton explained.
Criticism of Grenell’s Actions Toward Kurti
Bolton also criticized Richard Grenell, Trump’s former envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, regarding his stance on Albin Kurti during the elections. He labeled Grenell’s reaction as misguided and inappropriate.
