CIA Director William Burns met today in Sarajevo with Almir Xhuvo, the Director of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Intelligence and Security Agency. Burns later met with state leaders and Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković at the Bosnian Presidency.
Konaković shared details of the discussion, calling Burns’ visit highly significant. He emphasized that the visit demonstrates the United States’ strong commitment to the region, particularly to Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting its importance for regional stability.
“This visit is clear evidence that the U.S. keeps this region, especially Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the top of its priorities. It sends a strong message from the American administration to the region and the world that the U.S. is engaged,” Konaković told the Bosnian newspaper “Avaz.”
Konaković noted that Burns is well-informed about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They discussed key issues such as NATO’s importance, European integration, and factors aiding or hindering these processes. Some information exchanged during the meeting was not for public disclosure, further illustrating the seriousness with which the U.S. is addressing issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to Konaković.
The newspaper “Avaz” reported that Burns will continue his regional tour, visiting Belgrade after Sarajevo. When asked if this visit reflects increased U.S. focus on the region, Konaković replied:
“Without a doubt, yes. They will visit several other countries in the Western Balkans, showing the region’s importance to them. It’s crucial for us to calm the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, reduce tensions, and focus on economic development and the region’s future, rather than historical conflicts. The U.S. presence contributes to stabilizing relations and addressing issues important to citizens,” Konaković concluded.
