Brazilian police have successfully foiled a planned bomb attack targeting Lady Gaga’s concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro this past Saturday.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, working in coordination with the Ministry of Justice, reported that the suspects had been recruiting participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosive devices. The alleged goal of the plot was to gain notoriety on social media.
Police confirmed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the main suspect behind the plan and a teenager had been arrested.
The concert, which drew a crowd of over two million people, was a free public event.
Authorities also stated that the group behind the attack had been spreading hate speech, primarily targeting children, teenagers, and the LGBTQ+ community.
The suspect identified as the organizer was arrested in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul for illegal possession of a firearm, while the teenager was detained in Rio for possession of child pornography.
