The United Kingdom has launched its first air patrols over Poland as part of NATO’s mission “Eastern Shield”, following a recent Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace that raised serious security concerns on the alliance’s eastern flank.
According to an official government statement, two Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets departed from an airbase in eastern England on Friday evening and conducted their first patrol over Polish skies. The mission aimed to protect against potential aerial threats, including drones. Both aircraft returned safely to the UK early Saturday morning, Reuters reported.
A Strong NATO Signal
UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of the mission, stating:
“This mission sends a clear signal: NATO airspace will be defended.”
The operation comes amid heightened tensions with Russia and reflects NATO’s ongoing efforts to bolster military presence and air defense capabilities in Eastern Europe.
Strengthening Collective Security
The “Eastern Shield” mission underscores NATO’s commitment to deterring aggression and protecting its member states from emerging threats. With Poland being a frontline state bordering Ukraine and Belarus, reinforcing its airspace security has become a strategic priority for the alliance.
