The Government of the United Kingdom is planning to deploy a warship to protect the RAF base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, from potential Iranian attacks, The Times reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, an Iranian drone struck the runway at the RAF Akrotiri in the early hours of Monday, and British authorities stated that Iranian forces had targeted UK assets.

The newspaper, citing three sources, said that John Healey, the UK Defence Secretary, held a meeting with senior military officials on Tuesday to discuss sending the destroyer HMS Duncan to the region.

The UK Ministry of Defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the report.

Earlier on Tuesday, the semi-official Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported that France was planning to deploy anti-missile and anti-drone systems to Cyprus to strengthen its defenses.
