A British lawmaker has suggested that national teams should boycott the World Cup set to take place in North America, in response to actions by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
During a debate on Arctic security on Monday, Conservative MP Simon Hoare accused Trump of showing disrespect toward his allies and suggested that the United Kingdom respond similarly.
“Trump is stubborn, egotistical, and dislikes being embarrassed. Should King Charles’ state visit to the U.S. take place this year? Should football teams play in American stadiums for the World Cup? These are things that would embarrass the president at home. Now we must fight fire with fire,” he said.
Liberal Democrat MP Luke Taylor also supported Hoare’s statements.
“I want to agree with the honorable member for North Dorset (Hoare) and ask the government if they will consider canceling the king’s visit to the United States and also boycotting the World Cup to show Donald Trump that the only thing he responds to is his pride,” Taylor said.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper responded to these suggestions by stating that the United Kingdom will continue to pursue diplomacy with the U.S.
