Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has provoked strong international reactions after his participation in the military parade in Moscow on May 9, organized by Russia to mark the anniversary of the victory over Nazism. His attendance at this event, at a time when Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, has also alarmed members of the British Parliament.
British MP Emma Lewell-Buck announced on the social media platform “X” that she, along with 25 other MPs, has sent an official letter to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, calling for sanctions against Vučić and his associates.
“26 British parliamentarians, led by our Chair, Emma Lewell, have written to Foreign Secretary David Lammy, urging the UK government to impose sanctions on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and his associates. Enough is enough,” she wrote on “X.”
In the letter sent to the British Foreign Secretary, it is emphasized that Vučić, in addition to his connections with Putin’s regime, has deliberately acted to destabilize the Balkan region.
“Furthermore, President Vučić has attempted to destabilize Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the wider Balkan region by closely working with Putin’s Russia,” the letter states.
The MPs further express concern that Serbia, despite being a candidate for European Union membership, has not imposed any sanctions on Russia.
In their letter, they highlight that by participating in the parade in Moscow, Vučić has clearly demonstrated that Serbia has no interest in breaking away from Russia and continues to promote ultra-nationalist ideas and spread the ideology of Greater Serbia, risking a new bloody conflict in the region.
