Bulgaria is celebrating 21 years as a full member of NATO, the world’s most powerful military-political alliance, which serves as a guarantor of security, stability, and freedom for its citizens, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stated on the official Facebook page of the Council of Ministers.

“On March 29, 2004, our country made a strategic choice by joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alongside six other Eastern European nations. This was a historic milestone that paved the way for Bulgaria’s sustainable development, national security, and its role as a reliable ally in collective defense,” Zhelyazkov said, according to BTA.

In the current complex global landscape, NATO remains a cornerstone of Bulgaria’s security, he emphasized. As an active and responsible member, Bulgaria contributes to strengthening the Alliance and developing modern, combat-ready armed forces capable of responding to emerging security threats.

The prime minister expressed confidence that NATO will emerge stronger and more unified from present challenges. He stressed that Bulgaria’s future is firmly tied to stability, solidarity, and long-term partnerships with its allies.

As part of its commitment to NATO, Bulgaria has proposed establishing and hosting a multinational maritime coordination center to ensure safe navigation in the western Black Sea. This proposal was presented at the “Peace and Security for Ukraine” summit in Paris, attended by Zhelyazkov at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
