A passenger bus veered off a cliff early this morning in Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of 21 people and injuring at least 14 others, according to a local official.
The accident occurred in the early hours near the town of Kotmale, located approximately 140 kilometers east of the capital Colombo, in the mountainous central region of the country.
Local television footage showed the overturned bus at the bottom of a deep ravine, as rescue workers and bystanders helped extract survivors from the wreckage.
The driver, among the injured, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
At the time of the accident, about 50 people were on board. The bus was owned by a state-run transportation company, police reported.
Such accidents are unfortunately common in Sri Lanka, especially in hilly and mountainous areas, often due to reckless driving, poor road maintenance, and narrow, dangerous routes.
